RESEARCH CORNER: STUDY REVEALS 5-10% Increase in Swimming Ability among U.S. Children

MAS-GirlwBraidsA recent study commissioned by the USA Swimming Foundation and conducted by the University of Memphis and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas found a 5-10% improvement in overall swimming ability from our previous findings in 2010.

There is still much work to be done, however, as 64% of African American children, 45% of Hispanic children, and 40% of Caucasian children, along with 79% of the children from households with incomes less than $50,000, have low or no swim ability, putting them at increased risk for drowning. The 2017 study is a follow-up to a 2010 groundbreaking research study (Phase II) that identified the constraints impacting swimming participation among urban minority groups in the United States.
